Batten down the Hatches
(We are reposting emails from the past year into this blog space. This email was sent out on Fri. Jan. 23rd)
We had a good little reset on Monday and then hit the ground running again on Tuesday with shipping. Thank you to everyone who placed an order. Truly. It was one of those days where things moved fast, boxes kept stacking up, and yes, we even had to make an extra dry ice run to keep everything packed right and arriving safely.
If you’ve been watching the weather, it seems like the whole country is talking about the storm system expected to roll through today. We’ve been knee deep prepping over here. We are battening down the hatches (literally and figuratively).
A few of our outside chickens are getting moved back into the old brooder with extra hay, just to take the edge off the cold. The puppies are getting squared away, and our newer (to us) older dogs are getting all their cold-weather prep too. Blankets, shelter checks, the whole routine. (And heavy tarps...so many tarps to block drafts, the wind, etc.)
And then there are the cows.
The last few days have been busy making sure everyone is set up with what they’ll need. Extra hay stacked, feed ready for the weaned calves, supplies checked and rechecked. When it got really cold today, we were making the rounds breaking ice, checking water lines, and keeping a close eye on everyone. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s important work.
This is just part of winter on the ranch. A lot of planning, a lot of moving parts, and a whole lot of responsibility. We’re grateful for the break earlier this week, grateful for your orders, and grateful we get to do this work at all.
Stay warm, keep an eye on the forecast, and thank you for supporting our family and this little ranch of ours.
Talk soon,
Marci & Matt
